Okay, so I have this USB cable that is pretty new. It has two Word Documents on it and I want to upload them onto a different computer from the one I ususally use. I plugged it in and it said it was successfully installed. When I try to open the two Word documents onto Word it says I need a Microsoft Word 2002 disc to insert. I press cancel and it says Error 1706. I next press ok and it brings up an empty spreadsheet of Microsoft Word. When I try it with Microsoft Works (also on my computer I’m uploading on) it still says I need the Works cd. When it does come up I’ve even tried opening it through My Computer and it comes up with a File Conversion that says all different types of jibberish in different computer langauges and I’m in the US and all I want is English. I need my two papers fixed by Monday for a class I’m taking in college. Help! Please!

It is either corrupted or your original version of Word is too new for the other versions to read it.
I don’t know whether it will work, but you could try downloading a copy of Open Office, which is compatible with several different versions of Word, so far as reading documents goes.
Open Office is free. You can get it here:
Once you’ve opened it (if it works), you should be able to save as the most recent Word format, and go from there (or you could edit it in Open Office and then save as).
If your working whith windows microsoft word 98/97 and trying to view a word doc that has been typed up with windows microsoft word 2002/2000 you will need a compatability addon to view it.
i know this is like the same whith vista and xp.
i just dont think there is a download for 98/97 to 2002/200.
hope this helps
sorry, but usb cables can’t store data. it’s just a cable. i think what you mean is you have a flash drive, usb key, memory stick etc
can’t you just open it on the pc you wrote the docs on? can’t you email the docs to the other pc? burn ‘em to a cd? open the docs, copy & paste ‘em into a different program and save and try opening them on the other pc?
